Why Patience Is the Secret Ingredient to Successful PR Strategies

February 10, 2025

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my two decades(?!) in public relations, it’s this: success in PR doesn’t happen overnight. And yet, many companies fall into the trap of expecting instant results from their communications strategies. They launch a campaign, pitch a story, or roll out a thought leadership initiative, and when the payoff doesn’t come immediately, they pull the plug too soon.

The reality? PR and communications are long games. Building brand recognition and authority requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to play the long game. Let’s explore why giving your strategy time to work is essential—and what can happen when you stick with it.

The Myth of Instant Results

In a world of real-time metrics and quick wins, it’s easy to see why leaders expect immediate impact from PR efforts. But PR isn’t like flipping a switch—it’s more like planting a garden. You won’t see the fruits of your labor the moment you sow the seeds. Instead, it takes time for those efforts to grow into measurable results.

Depending on your program, team structure, goals, and other variables, it can take an average of 3-6 months to see meaningful results from PR campaigns, and sometimes longer for larger initiatives. Similarly, it can 6-12 months for thought leadership and brand-building efforts to gain traction.

If you’re expecting major headlines or a flood of leads in the first few weeks, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment—and missing out on the long-term benefits of a well-executed strategy.

Why PR Takes Time

There are several reasons PR strategies require patience:

  1. Relationship Building Takes Time
A big part of PR success comes from cultivating relationships with journalists, influencers, and other key stakeholders. These relationships aren’t built overnight—they require trust, consistency, and valuable contributions over time.
  2. Brand Recognition Doesn’t Happen Instantly
It takes multiple touchpoints for your audience to recognize and trust your brand. Research shows that it can take 7+ impressions before someone remembers your company. PR helps create those touchpoints, but it requires steady, ongoing effort.
  3. Storytelling Needs Momentum
A single press release or thought leadership article won’t move the needle. PR works best when it builds momentum through consistent storytelling across multiple channels. Each piece of coverage or content builds on the last, amplifying your brand’s presence over time.
  4. PR Success Isn’t Always Linear
Unlike a paid ad campaign, where you see immediate clicks or conversions, PR results can be less predictable. Coverage might come weeks or months after an initial pitch, and the ripple effects of that coverage can take even longer to manifest.

The Costs of Pulling the Plug Too Soon

When companies bail on their PR strategies prematurely, they miss out on long-term wins that could have transformed their brand. Without consistent effort, it’s impossible to build authority in your industry, cultivate a positive reputation with key audiences, or stay top-of-mind for customers, investors, and partners.

Moreover, frequent stops and starts can actually hurt your brand. A fragmented approach to communications can confuse your audience, erode trust, and make it harder to re-establish momentum later.

What Happens When You Give It Time

The payoff for patience is worth it. Companies that stick with their PR strategies over the long term see measurable benefits, such as:

  • Increased Brand Recognition: A consistent presence in the media and online builds awareness and familiarity with your brand.
  • Stronger Relationships: Over time, journalists and influencers come to see you as a trusted source, increasing the likelihood of coverage.
  • Thought Leadership: Regular contributions to industry conversations position your company as an authority, boosting credibility and trust.
  • Cumulative Impact: Each piece of coverage or content contributes to a larger narrative, creating a snowball effect that drives bigger results.

Staying the Course: Tips for PR Patience

If you’re ready to commit to a long-term PR strategy, here are a few ways to stay focused and manage expectations:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Understand that building brand authority is a marathon, not a sprint. Work with your comms team to set achievable short-term benchmarks while keeping an eye on long-term impact.
  2. Track Progress Over Time: Metrics like media mentions, share of voice, and audience engagement often grow incrementally. Regularly review these trends to see how your efforts are adding up.
  3. Communicate Internally: Keep leadership and stakeholders informed about the timeline and value of your PR efforts. Transparency helps manage expectations and ensures buy-in.
  4. Trust the Process: If you’ve hired a trusted comms team, lean into their expertise. They know how to nurture your brand’s reputation and position you for long-term success.

PR isn’t an overnight fix—it’s an investment in your brand’s future. By giving your communications strategy the time and consistency it needs to grow, you’ll reap the rewards of increased visibility, stronger relationships, and lasting credibility.
